When you are already working 9-5 (or, let’s face it, 7-7!), you might feel that you have neither the time nor the energy to start a business. You’re probably asking yourself how you can ever accommodate a business alongside your current hectic lifestyle...
But, I can assure you that it is perfectly possible to build a business while working - because I have actually done it! And if I can do it, you can, too!
You just need to set aside at least 5-10 hours per week to do your business, find pockets of time. Start tracking your schedule for a week. Your eyes will be opened as you will see that you have lots of time to spare.
Plan Your Optimal Schedule
First and most important of all, plan your time! You’d be amazed at how you spend your time. Create a schedule to understand how you are spending your time right now and how you can fit in all the things you want to achieve.
Obviously, we need to block out time to sleep, wash and eat. And (unfortunately) you will need time to work and commute. But then, focus on your priorities - schedule in time for your business. This can be one hour per day after work, or a good chunk of 4 hours on a weekend; or a three 2-hour session on a weeknight.
Outsource Tasks That Aren’t Priority
How to find all these extra hours? Well, I’m pretty sure a lot of your chores could be outsourced, or done in a more efficient way. Listing down all your activities will help you identify the tasks that are not priority or tasks that you can delegate and outsource. That can be, for example, cleaning the house - you can try to get a cleaner once a week for a couple of hours? Maybe rope in your partner or housemates to pull their weight? Outsourcing doesn’t always have to be paid!
Prep Your Life For Business Success
Building a business is not always easy. It is very important to pace yourself, otherwise, you will burn out. Make sure to schedule in some activities that you love too - a family bonding session, a social night with the girls, and a little self-care time, too!
Think of some activities that you can indulge yourself in. Maybe you love spa treatments or doing yoga or going to the gym. But really, self-care doesn’t have to be expensive - it can be a long warm bubble bath or cuddle with a good book and a cup of tea - anything that will help you relax and rest. Always, always commit yourself to self-care regimen weekly.
Implement A Weekly Review Process
Take a few minutes at the end of each week to take stock of how the last one went. Being conscious of how you use your time, how you feel, and what you enjoy, you can tweak your optimised schedule to suit your preferences and prevent stress or overwhelm from building up.
These few tricks can help you build your business even while working in the corporate world. I started my business while working 12 hours a day in finance, and almost all my clients start working with me when they are in a full-time job. You’ve got this! Get into a good routine and I promise, this will make your life so much easier. Remember, you are in control of your schedule!
